A milestone in a completed game

Connor McDavid marked his 800th NHL game with a goal and three assists as Edmonton beat Los Angeles 4–1 on 13 October 2026. The official NHL report and Sportsnet’s report agree on that result and his contribution. This article looks back at that completed match, rather than attributing the result to today’s schedule.

How the evening took shape

Sportsnet reports that Edmonton led 3–0 after the first period. McDavid had already scored and supplied two assists, then added another assist on Vasily Podkolzin’s late empty-net goal. Podkolzin finished with two goals. Goaltender Devon Levi made 39 saves, while Los Angeles finished ahead 40–17 in shots on goal. The result therefore needs more context than a quick glance at the margin might suggest.

Two ways to read the same score

For someone getting into hockey, this is a useful example of why a score and a shot total answer different questions. One tells you the outcome; the other counts shots reaching the goal or requiring a save. Neither is a complete description of how dangerous every opportunity was. A large shot advantage does not automatically prove that one team controlled every meaningful aspect of a game. Equally, a comfortable-looking final margin does not erase the work of the winning goalkeeper.

What to look for in the highlights

On a first viewing, follow the goals and McDavid’s involvement. On a second, pay attention to when the lead was established and how the later passages fit around it. That is an invitation to observe, not a claim that one match predicts Edmonton’s season. Eight hundred appearances are the milestone; the 4–1 win is one night within that career. Keeping those two scales separate makes the story more interesting.
